Social Justice in the Elementary Classroom – an Action Lab
This 6-month Action Lab Learning Community focuses on developing student-driven, community-based social justice projects. Participants will learn how to teach their elementary students to gather information and conduct research about local issues and community needs/challenges which will be the primary lever for planning, creating, implementing, and completing learner-centered projects both in the classroom and throughout their community. Teachers who participate in this Action Lab Learning Community will attend 2 “launching” sessions and then come together throughout the semester in person and through a virtual forum, to discuss the progress of their students’ social justice projects and collaborate with their colleagues. Participants will videotape their ongoing student projects and share with the Action Lab Learning Community.
- Teachers will earn 2 CPS Lane Placement Credits and/or 36 ISBE PD Clock Hours for attending 7 onsite sessions (1/17, 1/24, 2/14, 3/21, 4/4, 5/23, and 6/13/2017) and 2 virtual forums (3/8, 5/9/2017), and 4.5 hours of homework.
- Participants will be required to use their CPS accounts to access the asynchronous Google Suite for the virtual forums on an internet accessible computer.
- As a registered participant in the Social Justice in the Elementary Classroom Action Lab, you will be required to complete 4.5 hours of homework in between face-to-face and virtual classes. This includes implementing the unit(s) you design, collecting and analyzing student work, videotaping student sessions, and keeping an online reflection log (which will be sent to you after the first face-to-face meeting).
- In order to receive CPS Lane Placement and/or ISBE professional development credits for this professional learning opportunity, participants must attend all scheduled sessions, virtual forums, and complete homework.
The 6-month Action Lab is open to currently practicing CPS Pre-K – 8 teachers, librarians, school counselors, and school social workers. ‘Social Justice in the Elementary Classroom – an Action Lab’ is aligned to the CPS Framework for Teaching Components: 1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, and 3c.
